What mishandled baggage costs a 37-million-passenger carrier: a derivation from published figures
Applying SITA's published rates to a carrier of 37 million passengers gives 180,000 to 225,000 mishandled bags a year and US$47 million to US$62 million of cost. We show the arithmetic so it can be checked, and why the internally popular figures of 2 to 3% and 8 million bags cannot be right.

SITA's 2026 figures show 4.9 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers, down 23% in a year, and US$260 per bag. The layer where the money now sits is recovery, rerouting and delivery, and it is the least governed part of the operation.

Published tariffs charge per departing bag and per tonne of cargo. When a terminal runs above design capacity, off-airport acceptance is the difference between capped and uncapped revenue. The regulatory path for it already exists.
